K - Short Works
I don't know what's up with the title of this one. Apparently Galaxy had it as River, but World is listed as the real title in the F&SF bibliography. In Dimension Thirteen it's River, which makes me think that's the one Silverberg prefers, and it certainly makes more sense in the story.
Elena is a young woman from Earth who goes to a distant planet to live with the natives, a simple, happy people. There she becomes the wife of their leader, the King of the Golden River. His people live on an island with two volcanic peaks, and when one of them starts erupting, Elena begins to learn just how alien these people are.
A part of the novel of the same name.
