Part four of To Open the Sky. It is now 2152. The Vorsters pretty much control the Earth, the Harmonists have a good foothold on Venus, and the Martian colonists want as little as possible to do with either. Then a construction crew on Mars comes across what appears to be the tomb of David Lazarus, the follower of Vorst whose disagreement with the Founder (and subsequent martyrdom) led to the founding of the Harmonist splinter group. Will this discovery bring the two factions together, or create chaos in the Solar System? Or is there more going on than meets the eye?
A novelette set in the same alternate world in roughly the same time period as The Gate of Worlds. This one centers on the intrigues surrounding the imminent death of the Emir of Songhay, a powerful kingdom in West Africa. Once again, we have an innocent Englishman thrown into an exotic situation he does not comprehend, caught up in the scheming of Russians, Aztecs, Turks, power-hungry princes, and his fellow English. A lot of fun, full of rich detail and convincing alternate world speculations.
While looking for the Fountain of Youth, Ponce de Leon finds a tribe of Christian Indians who want to sail to Palestine and free Jerusalem.
